Office on Aging
This office provides a variety of informational services for senior citizens, family members and caregivers who assist seniors. These services include: Information & Assistance; Outreach; and Telephone Reassurance. Counseling on Medicare choices is available, including prescription drug plans. A limited Homemaker Service is available for frail, low-income elderly which also includes: Shopping Assistance; Transportation; and Assisted Transportation. A pet food program is provided (when pet food and funds are available) to assist low-income seniors with securing pet food. Office on Aging publishes the Senior Services Directory, a free comprehensive resource guide to services for Blount County seniors.
Currently, the Office on Aging has large-print editions of the Medicare 2012 handbook and also Spanish versions available free to any senior. Contact Joani Shaver at 983-8411 ext. 25 for a copy.
One of the types of calls that we receive through our Office on Aging relates to Caregiver Stress. Often caregivers do not realize there are ways to recognize the signs and symptoms of Caregiver Stress and steps they can take to reduce that stress. During the recent months of damage from storms, winds, and hail, many seniors are faced with hiring contractors to repair or remodel their homes. Hope for Today Cancer Support Group will feature Bill Johnson of Johnson Law Firm speaking at their monthly meeting on March 6, 2012 at 6:15 p.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church. He will be speaking on wills, durable powers of attorney and durable powers of attorney for health care. (Directions to Piney Grove Church: From Blount County Courthouse, go 1 mile on Court Street.
