Bill Johnson of Johnson Law Firm will be speaking on wills, durable powers of attorney and durable powers of attorney for health care at the March 6, 2012 meeting of the Hope for Today group. The meeting is at 6:15 p.m. and will be held at Piney Grove Baptist Church. Free transportation is provided and the Piney Grove Baptist Church bus will pick-up passengers at Broadway Towers at 5:45 p.m. Directions to Piney Grove Church are as follows: From Blount County Courthouse, go 1 mile on Court Street. Turn left on Wilkinson Pike and proceed 3 1/2 miles. Turn right onto Blockhouse Road at Chilhowee View Community Center. Go 1 mile, Piney Grove Baptist Church is on the left.

The Harlem Ambassadors Basketball Event was held on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Maryville College where approximately 1400 kids of all ages enjoyed a great time. The Harlem Ambassadors demonstrated some skilled basketball tricks and hilarious stunts. The Mobile Meals Dribblers gave them a run for their money with some great shots and smooth moves. The final score was Harlem Ambassadors 87 and Mobile Meals Dribblers 54. Pictured here are both teams with Mobile Meals Dribblers Coaches Joe Black and Loren Riddick. Not pictured are our great referees DJ Porter and Terry Yoakum and clock/scorekeeper Kim Woodard. Thanks to all!

Senior Nutrition Fundraiser Coming Wednesday

The Harlem Ambassadors vs. the Mobile Meals Dribblers Basketball Event will be held this Wednesday. All proceeds from the event will benefit the mobile meals program in Blount County. Due to the rising costs in food, supplies, and travel expenses in the Mobile Meals program, it has been necessary to begin a waiting list and look for ways to increase revenue and decrease expenses. This is the first fundraiser of this type that we have held for the mobile meals program. The Maryville College – Cooper Athletic Center will be the site for this fun event. The doors open at 6:20pm and the game begins at 7:00pm. Be sure not to miss this exciting event for a great cause!

Local celebrities will play on our Mobile Meals Dribblers basketball team against the national Harlem Ambassadors on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 @ 7:00pm at the Maryville College – Cooper Athletic Center. Tickets are on sale at Green Bank (now Capital Bank) locations, Blount County Chamber of Commerce, and Maryville College Cooper Athletic Center. Advance ticket prices – $9 adults; $7 students/seniors; kids 4 & under free.

Carla Douglas – former UT Lady Vol who won 2 national championships
Tony Jones – head basketball coach at Alcoa High School & previous assistant basketball Coach for UT men’s team

Darian Jones – former Alcoa High School star & coached at Hiwassee Junior College

Harlem Ambassadors vs Mobile Meals Dribblers

The Harlem Ambassadors are coming to town to play our own Mobile Meals Dribblers team. This will be Wednesday, February 1st at 7:00pm at Maryville College – Cooper Athletic Center. All proceeds will benefits Blount County Mobile Meals program (Meals on Wheels). Tickets are on sale at all Blount County Green Bank locations, Blount County Chamber of Commerce, and Blount County Community Action Agency. Tickets in advance: $9 for Adults, $7 Students/Seniors, kids 4 & under free. Tickets at the door: $11 for adults, $9 Students/Seniors, Kids 4 & under free. Call 983-8411 for more information.

AARP tax preparation slots available

AARP personnel will start taking calls for tax preparation appointments from 9 am to 3 pm January 17, 2012.

Call 230-0615 or 230-1668 to make appointments for free tax assistance by trained AARP tax representatives. When tax season begins, go to the Blount County Public Library’s Dorothy Herron Meeting Room B for your pre-scheduled appointment.

Appointments begin February 2nd and continue through April 17th.

Blount County Community Action Agency will not be providing Volunteer Income Tax Assistance in 2012.

Whether you have been a volunteer with our Meals on Wheels program, our Commodity Food Distribution program, the Board of Directors, or helped in the office, the time you have given to us is priceless. Whether you have provided donations to our Share the Warmth Program, Meals on Wheels Program, or allowed us to use your gift wherever it was most needed, we could not reach the low-income individuals, elderly, and disabled in Blount County without you. Your support over the years is deeply appreciated.

Thanks to your generosity, we continue to work to meet our mission so that BCCAA provides services to meet basic needs of low-income individuals, families, elderly, disabled and develops resources with partnering agencies to improve lives..

AARP TaxAide calling for Volunteers

Volunteers are needed to assist with the AARP TaxAide program in Blount County. In the past, BCCAA has provided tax assistance through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, however, in 2010 we discontinued this program. We have been referring our volunteers and clients to the AARP TaxAide program for assistance.

Volunteers are needed to take appointments over the phone and to post these appointments to an online program. AT&T provides the phones and the United Way of Blount County provides the office space and computers for the duration of the tax season. A volunteer would be needed to assist four hours a week in the middle of January until early April. Training will be provided in early January.

Last year, the AARP TaxAide program assisted over 1,500 Blount County taxpayers with this service. If interested in volunteering contact Tom Hendrix at 983-7754.
